Acclaimed brick artist Nathan Sawaya
is bringing his works to Southeast Asia for the first time, right here in
Singapore. The Art of the Brick,
deemed by CNN as one of 12 “Must-see Exhibitions”, will treat visitors to
stunning displays of intricate sculptures made from hundreds and thousands of
pieces of LEGO bricks.

Sawaya, who has exhibited at numerous distinguished galleries and museums
worldwide. He explained, “I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created
from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to it since it
is a toy that many children have at home.”
Originally, the exhibition at
ArtScience Museum that has been running since November 17, 2012 was slated to
close on April 14, 2013. However, it was later extended to May 26 due to
overwhelming response. Upon the extension, additional workshops that
complements Sawaya’s creative showcase will also be introduced.
The New York-based artist will bring
52 large-scale LEGO sculptures to life through thought-provoking works, some
created specifically for the exhibition run at ArtScience Museum. One of the
showcase’s highlights is a sculpture of the stunning architectural masterpiece,
the ArtScience Museum itself. Sawaya has been commissioned to specially build
the sculpture, made from 15,999 LEGO bricks. Another main feature is a
six-meter-long T-Rex skeleton that took three months to complete.
One of Sawaya’s most ambitious works, this T-Rex skeleton will be on display at The Art of Play. |
The ArtScience Museum sculpture will be at the last gallery. |
Other pieces of Sawaya’s works you can
expect to see at the exhibition are his iconic pieces “Yellow” and “Swimmer”,
artworks that depict the human form such as “Red Skull” and “Mask” in The
Emotion Box, and more in The Artist’s Studio, The Catwalk Gallery, The Drawing
Board and so on.
